Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise as a young child. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her mother the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art and theater. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through experience that art can be a powerful instrument for social activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and influenced that she could express her thoughts through art. While DuVernay was raised within Compton with her family she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just an elementary school student. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury as well as go through their garbage. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired out of college as an intern at an unassuming studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye. In the beginning in high school Sasha came out as transgender. The family of Sasha was supportive during the tough times, and Sasha knew that he was capable of anything when it came to music. Jim and Sasha have now become a formal couple. The two songwriters have both performed at various local venues and open mics.
